How to achieve this in easy steps with expert guidance

Step 1

Step 2

shibori_wrkshp-02

Pinch the central point of your silk and gradually twist it to form a tight central spike. The twists away from the center should form softer spirals

shibori_wrkshp-01

Dampen the silk with water using a fine spray

Step 3

Step 4

shibori_wrkshp-04

Select your chosen dye, always using a different pipette for each colour

shibori_wrkshp-05

Starting at the spike slowly drip the dye on to the silk

Step 5

Step 6

shibori_wrkshp-06

Gradually drip the colour along the outer soft ripples of silk leaving white space between

shibori_wrkshp-07

Chose your second colour, using a different pipette, and drip the colour from the center outwards into the white spaces. Some of this dye should overlap the first colour towards the center.

Step 7

Step 8

shibori_wrkshp-08

Gradually work your 2nd colour out towards the edges for your silk

shibori_wrkshp-09

Using your fingers blend the two colours together with gentle sweeps

Step 9

Step 10

Finally a little darker colour can be added to the central spike & down as far as you want to take it

shibori_wrkshp-12

Pour clean water into the bottom of the steamer, keeping it below the tray level

Step 11

Step 12

shibori_wrkshp-13

Pick up the silk by the point and lift it over the tray without it untwisting

shibori_wrkshp-14

Place the silk onto the tray keeping the spiral form

Step 13

Step 14

shibori_wrkshp-15

Place on the steamer Lid and place in a microwave for 3 mins on full power

shibori_wrkshp-16

The steam sets the dye into the silk to create a stable design

Step 15

shibori_wrkshp-18

Your stunning new piece of silk can be used in many different ways, in the examples bellow we have used selected pieces of silk decorated using the technique above and bonded them to fused glass shapes.
